MARYLAND JUNIOR HUNT CUP CONDITIONS

2008 Conditions

GOVERNOR'S CUP RELAY RACES - 9:30 AM

Inter-Hunt (mirror image) course. Please see Hunt Club Relay for complete conditions. There will also be a division for Juniors starting at 9:30 am.

*1ST RACE- JUNIOR PONY LEADLINE TROT RACE- 12:00 PM

For ponies. To be ridden by Juniors who have not reached their 7th birthday as of the first of the year. All ponies must have a leadline attached to their bridle and must be accompanied by an adult. Entries breaking out of the trot must go behind the last entry in the field before continuing or may be disqualified. Riders must wear ASTM approved helmets. Overgirths and protective vests are highly encouraged. Racing silks encouraged, proper riding attire accepted.
About 1/16 mile
DIV I (conditions above) - Small, Medium, Large Awards
DIV II - No age limit, not eligible for Div I. For riders needing 2-3 assistants. Indicate entry size.

2ND RACE- JUNIOR PONY FLAT RACES

Pony races open to juniors who have not reached their 16th birthday as of the first of the year. Divisions may be split or combined.
DIVISION I- SMALL PONIES (1/4 MILE)
DIVISION II- MEDIUM PONIES (1/4 MILE)
DIVISION III- LARGE PONIES (1/2 MILE)

*3RD RACE—MARYLAND YOUNG RIDER HUNT CUP
Young Rider Timber Race/Field Master's Chase

Open to amateur riders between 16-21 y.o., on horses & large ponies who are a min. of 5 years old. Entries must have completed several Field Master’s Chase races (Jr. or Sr.), a timber race, or be approved by the race committee. No rider allowances. All owners, riders, and horses must be acceptable to the committee. Weight 150 lbs. All rider’s MUST attend a mandatory course walk, time TBD. First TB, Non-TB, & pony trophies awarded. Entries must provide their own lead. Race is carded as timber race, but may change to Field Master’s Chase pending entries, indicate your preference upon entry. About 3 miles over fences not to exceed 3 1/2’.

4TH RACE—STICK PONY RACE

Open to amateur “jockeys” 7 years of age and under. Entry fee $5. All jockeys must supply their own “mount” and are encouraged to wear racing silks. Prizes to all starters. Enter at NAPTP.com. About 20 feet on the flat.

*5TH RACE—MARYLAND JUNIOR HUNT CUP
Field Master’s Chase

Open to amateur riders, who have not reached their 16th birthday as of the first of the year, on horses who are a minimum of 5 years old and are not to have won a sanctioned timber race in the last 3 years. Catch weights. Riders are to follow the Field Master over a flagged course over approximately 2 miles of fair hunting country. After the last fence, the Field Master will release the field to race for the finish. Racing silks preferred. All entries will run together, but a trophy will go to the first TB and first non-TB to finish.

DIVISION II- NON-THOROUGHBRED

*5TH RACE—THE MARYLAND PONY HUNT CUP
Field Master’s Chase

Open to amateur riders on ponies. Riders are not to have reached their 16th birthday as of the first of the year. All ponies must be a minimum of 5 years old. Catch weights. Riders are to follow the Field Master over a flagged course over approximately 2 miles of fair hunting country. After the last fence, the Field Master will release the field to race for the finish. Racing silks preferred. All divisions will run together, but trophies will be awarded to the first small, medium, and large ponies to finish.

NO POST ENTRIES

Be sure to include size of pony and breed of horse at time of entry. Entries may be measured the day of the race to ensure proper division placement. All ponies/horses may only compete in the relay division or in one race on the day. However, ponies maybe used once in the Leadline Trot race and then again in a second race/relay.
Entry Fees ($25.00) to be paid on race day prior to acceptance of entry- cash or check payable to Land Preservation Trust. Proof of rider health insurance and neg. coggins required. Release forms must be signed. Races may be combined, canceled, or split. ALL ENTRIES must be approved by the committee or must have successfully raced in a Field Master’s Chase prior to race day and/or attended the schooling session.

MANDATORY SCHOOLING SESSION
Location TBA, April 22, 2:00 pm
This practice is required for any horse/pony that has not competed in the Maryland Junior Hunt Cup. Call for details.

*Indicates NAPPA Championship Series qualifying race. Entrants in these races automatically qualify to compete at the NAPPA Championship Day on May 24, 2008 @ Shawan Downs (see pg 34 in the conditions book for details)! Become a member of NAPPA today (see pg 38)!

NOTE: The use of a whip is strictly prohibited in all races this day (excluding the Young Rider Timber Race). All riders must wear current ASTM/SEI approved helmets and safety vests. All horses and ponies must wear overgirths and must have a proper leather or nylon bridle with a bit (or a hackamore).
